Chloramphenicol, is a broad-spectrum antibiotic produced by Streptomyces chloromyces that can inhibit bacterial growth.

Chloramphenicol acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It reversibly binds to the 50S subunit on the 70S ribosome of bacteria, thus preventing the amino acid terminal of aminoacyl tRNA from binding to the receptor on the ribosome. In this way, the amino acid substrate cannot interact with transpeptidase and therefore cannot form peptide bonds (see Pratt and Fekety, 1986). Chloramphenicol is usually an antibacterial agent, but it can also have a bactericidal effect on common meningeal pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus meningitidis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae at therapeutic concentrations (Rahal and Simberkoff, 1979). The physical and chemical properties of 70S ribosome in mammalian mitochondria are similar to those of the drug contained in bacterial cells. Many adverse reactions of chloramphenicol, including dose-related bone marrow suppression and gray syndrome, seem to be caused by inhibition of host mitochondrial protein synthesis.
