 Lutein or Xanthophyll is a steroid hormone secreted by ovarian luteal cells, which contains 21 carbon atoms of Chemicalbook. It is also an intermediate product in the synthesis of all steroid hormones, and is one of Progestogen. There are two crystal forms, namely α- Type and β- The two crystal forms have the same physiological activity, α- Type A is precipitated from dilute ethanol, which is white prismatic crystal of Orthorhombic crystal system, β- Type A is white acicular crystal of Orthorhombic crystal system. Both are insoluble in water and soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, acetone, dioxane and concentrated sulfuric acid.
