Atovaquone (atavaquone) is a naphthalene compound. Atovaquone is a hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, a ubiquinone analogue with anti cysticercosis activity. Atovaquone is an antigenic mitochondrial electron transfer inhibitor, antimalarial drug, anti pneumocystis, and also used in the treatment of toxoplasmosis. It inhibits the action of cytochrome bc (1) complex by interacting with Rieske ferritin and cytochrome b in the ubiquinone oxidation pocket.
