Atropine (Tropine tropite) sulfonate is a broad-spectrum, competitive antagonist of muscarine acetylcholine receptor (mAChR).



Anticholinergic drugs, used for the treatment of gastrointestinal and biliary colic, mydriasis, optometry, keratitis, organophosphorus pesticide poisoning, septic shock, and other syndromes



(1) Atropine has a relaxing effect on visceral smooth muscle, and its intensity is related to the dosage and functional state of visceral smooth muscle. The therapeutic effect of atropine on normal smooth muscle activity is relatively small, but its relaxation effect is evident when the smooth muscle is spasmodic or in an excessively contracted state. Among various visceral smooth muscles, atropine has the strongest antispasmodic effect on gastrointestinal smooth muscles, followed by bladder detrusor muscle, while its effect on bile duct, ureter, and bronchial smooth muscles is weaker.

(2) Inhibiting gland secretion can inhibit the secretion of salivary glands, bronchial glands, gastrointestinal glands, lacrimal glands, etc. After medication, it can cause dry mouth and thirst.

(3) The impact on cardiovascular system can increase heart rate in large doses, while treatment can temporarily slow down heart rate; It can counteract atrioventricular block and arrhythmia caused by excessive vagal nerve stimulation; Large doses can relieve small artery spasms and improve microcirculation.

(4) The effect on the eyes is to dilate the pupils, increase intraocular pressure, and cause amblyopia paralysis.

(5) Effect on the central nervous system High dose atropine has obvious central excitatory effect. It can also excite the motor area and sensory area of cerebral cortex in addition to the vagus nerve center and respiratory center. When poisoned, it causes strong excitement in the brain and spinal cord.

(6) Atropine is the main antidote for cholinergic drug poisoning. When livestock are poisoned by organophosphorus pesticides, a large amount of acetylcholine accumulates in the body, exhibiting strong M-like and N-like effects. Atropine can quickly and effectively relieve toxic symptoms of M-like effects, especially in relieving bronchospasm, inhibiting bronchial gland secretion, alleviating gastrointestinal symptoms, and combating cardiac depression. Atropine can also relieve some toxic symptoms in the central nervous system, but it has no effect on N-like toxic symptoms. In addition, atropine is also the main detoxifying agent for the cardiotoxicity (arrhythmia) of antimony agents on cattle, and for the serious adverse reactions of antigenic insecticides such as quinoline urea.
