Sulfathiazole is a white or light yellow crystalline powder; clinically it belongs to the sulphonamide group of drugs and is used for the treatment of pneumococcal, meningococcal, gonococcal and haemolytic streptococcal infections.

The antibacterial mechanism of action of sulfathiazole is to inhibit the growth and reproduction of bacteria by inhibiting the synthesis of folic acid. Bacteria sensitive to this drug cannot use exogenous folic acid directly from the growth environment during the process of growth and reproduction. They must use p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) in vitro, which is synthesized together with dihydrochloridic acid with the participation of dihydrofolate synthase in the bacterium, and then formed into tetrahydrofolate by the action of dihydrofolate reductase, which further synthesizes nucleic acid together with other substances such as purines and pyrimidines. Sulfathiazole has a similar chemical structure to PABA and can compete with PABA for dihydrofolate synthase, thus preventing the synthesis of folic acid in sensitive bacteria and exerting an inhibitory effect.
